Media Contagiosity

Media Contagiosity is the contagious nature of the media being shared on the internet. This is an attempt to understand the formulas that make certain forms of media circulate faster and further over other ones. The viral and the contagious nature of media online is related the capability of a form of digital media to spread across the internet and reach a far off audience, taking into account spreadability, stickiness, rhetorical velocity and circulation. A prime example of this media contagiosity is Kony 2012. This spread like wildfire across the internet and into our daily lives. Many millions of people became multipliers of this video. It had a way of staying with us and initiating a response in the viewer because of the ethos in the video.

But what is probably the most important aspect of media contagiosity is humor. Most of what you see circulating on the internet and what you see people remixing and creating are humorous content. That media speaks to the culture of the internet and promotes media ecology. All memes for example have a humorous and sarcastic aspect to them. Not all memes are going to be contagious, though. There needs to be a sense that the content is relatable for it to get shared on social media.
